Sugar cane is a crop requiring much water. Northern plain rainfall is insufficient for this crop. The region's hilly topography and strong winds make above ground sprinkler irrigation almost impossible. Local government agencies turned to Netafim for a cost-effective, underground sprinkler system solution. The RAM multi-seasonal, pressure compensated driplines were recommended for the job. The dripline irrigation system was installed at a depth of 40 cms. This also allowed for easier harvesting. As a result, water resources were used more efficiently and initial yields exceeded other fields in Mauritius by 50 tons and more per hectare.
