Pioneering Sustainability: Coffee Farm Embraces Drip Irrigation in Costa Rica

A Legacy of Coffee Excellence Meets Innovation

At the heart of Costa Rica’s renowned coffee region, Santa Anita Coffee Farm, owned by Agrícola El Cántaro, is embracing the future with Netafim’s advanced drip irrigation technology. As a fourth-generation coffee-growing family, their commitment to sustainability and innovation is shaping the next chapter of Costa Rica’s coffee industry.

Precision Irrigation: The Future of Coffee Farming

Precision irrigation ensures coffee farms remain resilient against climate variability by providing crops with the exact amount of water and nutrients needed at the right time. This results in uniform growth, reduced fruit abortion, and larger, high-quality coffee cherries. With optimized water usage, coffee plants experience minimal stress, leading to consistent yields year after year. Additionally, precision irrigation accelerates the transition from planting to full commercial production, improving ROI and sustainability. At Santa Anita, the implementation of drip irrigation has not only increased productivity but also improved efficiency, ensuring every drop of water and nutrient directly benefits the crops. This smart approach to irrigation exemplifies how technology and sustainability can go hand in hand to shape the future of coffee farming.

Overcoming Climate Challenges with Smart Irrigation

"I believe the main challenge we face today is climate change. Summers are drier, hotter, windier, and increasingly unpredictable," says Juan Manuel Sánchez, President of Agrícola El Cántaro. With changing weather patterns threatening productivity, Santa Anita turned to Netafim for a solution that would ensure consistent coffee production despite environmental challenges.

“With Netafim’s help, we’ve not only increased productivity but also improved yield efficiency, requiring fewer coffee cherries to complete a kilogram or a standard volume unit.

Juan Manuel Sánchez, President of Agrícola El Cántaro

A Sustainability Milestone: Carbon-Neutral Certification

Santa Anita takes pride in being the first carbon-neutral certified coffee farm and processing facility in the world, certified by Costa Rica’s Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE) through the Carbon Neutrality Country Program (PPCN). The certification is based and further reinforced by international accords, including the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the UNFCCC Paris Agreement on climate change, and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), ensuring adherence to globally recognized environmental standards. This voluntary initiative allows organizations to measure, reduce, and offset their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, contributing to national decarbonization efforts.

By integrating precision irrigation with sustainability initiatives, Santa Anita continues to lead the way in responsible and efficient coffee farming, setting a benchmark for environmentally conscious agriculture.

Looking Ahead

As Santa Anita Coffee Farm moves forward, Phase 2 of the project promises even greater advancements in productivity and sustainability. With Netafim’s continued support, they are set to redefine the future of coffee farming in Costa Rica—one drop at a time.
